This is an illustration of one of the hottest chili peppers, the Ghost Pepper, also known by the name Bhut Jolokia. This type ripens to a bright red and its shape resembles that of a ghost, featuring a rough texture and indentations that resemble a dried chili pepper. In Assamese, 'Bhut' means 'of Bhutan' and 'Jolokia' means 'chili'. The word 'Bhut,' which is a homophone originating from Hindi, carries a ghostly connotation, hence it is also called ghost chili.
